Field test for compost maturity
Article Abstract:
The Slovita compost maturity test is a useful technique to assess the maturity level of a product. It is easy to use but a flow chart can help in clarifying the process. A high degree of consistency was seen in the readings of different team members showing that results are reproducible. Comparison with a subjective evaluation of maturity showed agreement between expected and actual results. The test fails in situations where the product is too wet or dry, or consists of a sawdust and crab compost or newly mixed materials.

Regulating how manure is managed and used
Article Abstract:
The new Nutrient Management Law introduced in Maine requires all farms with 50 animal units or more to draw up a nutrient management plan. It also bans the spreading of manure between Dec 1 and Mar 15 each winter and states that certain other types of farm operations must develop and put into effect a nutrient management plan. It is hoped that this legislation will encourage more efficient use of nutrients on agricultural land and lead to a rise in the composting of manure and other alternatives to landspreading.
