Grade schooler questions an industry recycling goal
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken by a grade schooler has revealed that the National Polystyrene Recycling Co (NPRC) has fallen a long way short of its commitment to reach a 25% recovery level across the US by 1995. Indeed, a polystyrene industry representative has been forced to admit that the industry is recycling only 2% of polystyrene. It appears that it would have actually been extremely difficult to reach the 25% target, even though the polystyrene industry had very good reasons to attempt to do so. Collected volumes are small, and there are high levels of product contamination.

China syndrome
Article Abstract:
Although China can become a successful new market for recycled commodities, its political conduct may invite trade restrictions by the US. Plastics and paper use grows in China, thus creating a wider market for recyclable goods. The US would be short-term suppliers as China will eventually develop an internal supply of recycled goods. Trade in recycled products may increase in the absence of armed conflicts or trade restrictions in China. Annexation of Taiwan by China will have negative impact on the US recycling industry.

It's another new day for haulers
Article Abstract:
Some large waste hauling companies are expected to acquire smaller firms but their involvement in the provision of recycling services may decrease because of problems with profitability. However, international demand for recyclable commodities is rising. In response to this, the recycling industry and state governments must focus on market development. Furthermore, the industry needs to expand its market and implement service innovations.
