Investigations into liquid compost extracts

Article Abstract:

Liquid compost extracts called compost teas have fungicidal and disease suppressive properties, and are different from leachates, compost humic extracts and compost microbial starters. Compost teas are applied directly to plant surfaces through high pressure spraying apparatus. They inhibit spore germination, compete with pathogens and induce short-term resistance against pathogens due to a coating of actual live bacteria. Age of the compost tea and the nature of the source of its contents are important factors for its effectiveness. A method for making compost teas is provided.

State highway departments find it pays to use compost: nationwide survey of state transportation agencies answers key questions about cost savings, application results and compost specifications, part II

Article Abstract:

A nationwide survey commissioned by the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) has revealed that the most common concern among DOTs which use compost are contamination and maturity. While contamination by weed seeds, pathogens, heavy metals and salts can be controlled by specification, pieces of glass or plastic and heavy odours have been reported by some DOTs. Many DOTs are making plans to expand the types of compost they can use. An overview of the survey findings is included.
