Handling liquids and solids on hog farms
Article Abstract:
Kersey, CO-based National Hog Farms (NHF) began composting separated solids from its swing operations in Feb. 1995. The success of the pilot program led to full-scale composting. NHF contracted its composting operations to Gardener's Best Organic Compost (GBOC) in 1996. NHF and GBOC are currently conducting a research project with a Colorado cattle producer on the possibilities of producing a good, cost-effective finished compost by combining cattle pen manure, straw and swine solids.
