It's time to think creatively about waste
Article Abstract:
Athens County, OH, Litter Control and Recycling Program Dir Tom O'Grady and Ohio University in Athens Recycling and Waste Coordinator Ed Newman give their piece to the critics of their recycling efforts. Both O'Grady and Newman believe in the cooperative involvement of residences and offices in source separating their trash. With their leadership and creative management planning, they have made Athens County become known for recycling collection drives which they have called the Ultimate Recycling Days and have put up a good show against their detractors.

Pomace is a grape resource
Article Abstract:
The large output of grape pomace from California's wineries can be converted into a valuable resource with composting technology. A distinct advantage of using grape pomace as raw material for compost production is the predictability of the nutrient composition of its product, since the raw material is made up of essentially grape waste. The product also possesses some benefits over raw pomace, raw manure or synthetic fertilizers, which includes better plant uptake of nutrients and apparent depression of leafhopper infestation.

Where's the waste at this nursery?
Article Abstract:
Monrovia Nursery Company started recycling in 1970, moving from runoff water to composting plant, woody waste, and paper, and today it recycles all of its waste, which includes plant trimmings, scrap wood, weeds, discarded plants, paper, and cardboard from its 1000 acres. The research director of the nursery, Conrad Skimina, who was behind much of the recycling effort, emphasizes that the reduction of nitrogen, and the energy required to generate it, benefits others besides Monrovia Nursery Co.
