Learning the processing business
Article Abstract:
The Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) has seen a recent improvement in its financial position, just as other material recovery facilities (MRFs) operators have. Improvements in MRFs, besides providing good incentives for efficiency and a better work environment, have increased the sale of recycled materials. Operating its own MRF has helped ACUA to take full advantage of doing better at the markets and raise its revenues. Support from the community is available as facilities to educate people on the MRFs have been taken into account.

Cocomposting in Hawaii
Article Abstract:
A pilot project to cocompost yard trimmings with biosolids, grease and cooking oil was started in June 1993 in Hawaii. The compost site is at the base of Haleakala, and the windrow method was used for odour control. The operation now represents over half of the 28% recycling rate in the country, and around 19,000 wet tons/year of digested biosolids are composted, and aerated static piles with biofiltration are now used.
