Organics recycling in Britain
Article Abstract:
Centralized composting has undergone a turnaround in the UK, with policy changes made by both the central government and the European Union (EU). With growth in composting sites experienced since 1990, interest in composting ensures a continuing growth. The publication of the EU's Landfill Directive, will lead to restrictions on organic content percentage in landfilled wastes. By 1998, the EU will also start banning the dumping of biosolids at sea. A tax on landfilling was also started in 1996, forcing community participation in both centralized and backyard composting.

More recycling and composting in Great Britain
Article Abstract:
A waste management program in UK targets to reduce landfilling, and increase recycling and composting. Recycling plans for individual municipalities are being introduced. Tighter environmental protection standards on landfill sites increase the cost of landfilling. To achieve targets without legislation, all wastes going into landfills are being taxed. Community implemented recycling program is functional in Bath. Croydon, a community of 120,000 households, has introduced centralized composting, charcoal production and backyard programs.

Britain at the recycling crossroads
Article Abstract:
Britain has instructed all its waste collection authorities to prepare recycling plans that will achieve a target of recycling 25% of household waste by the end of the 20th century. Recycling programs were launched in a big way in the 1980's, and by 1993 there were almost 40 curbside programs. The emphasis of most programs has been on collecting recyclables from the waste stream. Recycling programs will be given priority along with education and publicity.
