Meat wastes, composting and EC directives
Article Abstract:
A new directive from the European Community (EC) banning composting of dead diseased animals and spoiled meat, termed as high risk, will affect disposal options for poultry, farmers and meat processors. Approved rendering processes, incineration and burial are the routes prescribed for different categories of animal waste. Only wastes categorized as low risk material can be composted. The EC has issued directives to check infections from BSF and salmonella. Many argue that the materials put under the high risk category have been approved for composting in some states in the US.
