Monitoring bioaerosols at composting facilities
Article Abstract:
The UK faces significant challenges as it considers where composting facilities can be constructed. Local opposition to the construction of a composting facility has often focused on the dispersal of bioaerosols, which consist of very small biological particles suspended in the air as an aerosol, from the planned site. The Composting Association has responded to concerns about bioaerosols by undertaking an 18-month research project. It is looking at issues including the impact of atmospheric conditions on bioaerosol dispersal, and plans to publish the sampling protocol in early 1999.

Bioaerosols and composting: analysis of health impacts
Article Abstract:
Studies on the risks of bioaerosols associated with solid waste composting confirm that composting facilities do not pose threats to public health and environment. The general public are not susceptible to systemic or tissue infections associated with bioaerosols. Immunocompromised, asthmatic and allergic persons are affected by pathogens present in compost. Basic measures such as protecting workers from overexposure to bioaerosols will minimize health risks.

Low cost composting methods for farmers
Article Abstract:
Educators and members of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service in Indiana have actively participated in educating farmers in the region to evolve cost-effective, versatile methods for recycling problem wastes such as animal carcasses. Among other things, farmers in the region have gained valuable insight on composting cattle and poultry manure.
