Using windrow technology to compost biosolids
Article Abstract:
Steiner Umwelttechnik's compost facility in Grafenstein, Austria, has capacity of 15,000 tons a year. It uses the open air windrow composting technology, with sludge being treated anaerobically and drained in a chamber filter before composting. Yard trimmings are processed by using a Komptech Mashmaster mixing/shredder unit, with biosolids being added in a second phase. The biosolids compost is kept in the windrows for between eight and 10 weeks before being screened and stored under roof.

Windrow injection for high nitrogen liquids
Article Abstract:
A windrow injection system involves the insertion and pulling of an injector tip through the windrow so that compost covers the injected nitrogen pharmaceutical sludge. This buries the compost under a carbon source, eliminating in its wake both surface applied odors and ponding in alleys caused by the nitrogen residuals. The injection system is durable, cost-effective and efficient, and employs an applicator mounted on a rolloff skid, truck and hoist.

United Kingdom: Composting seafood waste by windrow and in-vessel methods
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom determines safety and practicality of seafood by-product composting and how biological treatment relates to marketability of finished material. Their methods entail use of timber processing residues as a bulking and amendment material for open windrow composting using passively ventilated windrow or small in-bin systems.
