New partners enter on-farm composting

Article Abstract:

New partnerships between poultry and forest industries in West Virginia are helping farms and industries to develop low cost on-farm composting projects. Forestry's problem with sawdust can be dealt with by using it as an additive in composting poultry litter. On-farm composting is made possible by mobile operations in which smaller sites are established and processing equipment is shuffled between the sites. On-farm composting programs in Vermont and New York demonstrate the need to develop cost-effective alternative to integrate manure into their farming systems, while avoiding pollution problems.

Kristiansand leads the way in biowaste composting

Article Abstract:

The Kristiansand region in Norway built a full-scale biowaste facility in Stoleheia about 20 km to the north. The Stoleheia Composting Facility includes a new landfill, treatment lagoons and a drop-off recycling center. The facility processes waste from the city of Kristiansand and the communities of Songdalen, Sogne and Vennesla. The wastes are processed by an agitated bin composting system which has a capacity of 15,000 wet metric tons/yr of biowaste and 10,000 wet metric tons/yr of biosolids. The facility enabled the region to increase its recycling rate to 55% in 1997.
