Paper mill sludge: feedstock for tomorrow

It has become increasingly common for paper mill sludge to be reused, rather than landfilled. Some is being returned to the paper production cycle, while some is being used for other applications. In 1995, the members of the National Council of the Paper Industry for Air and Stream Improvement, which account for around 70% of the US papermaking industry, produced just under 3.9 million tons of sludge. Some 25% of this was covered by utilization schemes, with 25% being incinerated and around 50% landfilled or lagooned. Applications for paper mill sludge include land reclamation and agriculture.

Producers expand line of mulch products

It is now possible to purchase mulch in a wide range of different colours. Iowa Recycling and Grinding, for example, reports a significant rise in sales of coloured mulch, and had to purchase wood in 1999 to meet demand. J.A. Rutters Inc of Pittsburgh, PA, makes coloured wood mulch from pallet lumber, most of which is kiln dried. Coloured mulches are sold at between 25% and 30% more than ordinary mulches, and can often offer a viable market for wood that is otherwise hard to recycle.
