Plastic lumber bridges the gap at army base
Article Abstract:
A plastic bridge made from recycled mixed plastics that were originally intended for a landfill testifies to the potential that plastic has over wood as a construction material. The 25-ft long and 26.5-ft wide bridge, which can be found at Fort Leonard Wood in Champaign, IL, may not represent the largest recycled plastic lumber used in history, but it does bear a structural strength that no other recycled plastic bridge is known to have. The bridge was built under the joint efforts of the US Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories, Fort Wood's DPW and the EPA, among others.

Mixed waste sorting in Las Vegas
Article Abstract:
Several Las Vegas hotels have adopted the mixed waste dockside sorting system for separating waste and recyclables. One to four employees are hired on a contract basis to sort garbage on site per shift. Bags of mixed waste are taken via trash chutes or employee collection to the loading dock area. As each bag arrives, the sorters tear open each bag and keep aside recyclables such as glass, plastic and aluminium. Silverware, plates, linens, salt and pepper shakers are also recovered during the sorting process. By recycling, hotels are able to save on yearly hauling fees.
