Poultry farm pioneers low-rate composting
Article Abstract:
A&J Farms in Louisville, OH, is made up of 14 separately operating chicken farms. Each of these farms has up to 10 chicken-raising barns, and there are a total of 105 barns. Between 65,000 and 70,000 birds are sent out for processing each day. The business has adopted a low-rate approach to composting chicken litter within the barns, and has been successful in significantly reducing chick mortality. It operates a cycle of raising a flock and then rotary tilling and levelling the litter. This is continued for a total of five to seven times, with the litter then being removed and a new cycle started.

Words are important
Article Abstract:
The term 'waste' is being applied to an entire gamut of disposables, most of which are recyclable. Things are classified as waste and resources are then spent to teach people that they are reusable. Certain terminology and phrases have led to problems in classification. Part of the activity of recycling industries involves selling their products and services. A close look at the terminology being used would help in marketing, and would encourage the conservation of resources.
