Products from bark and stumps
Article Abstract:
Wood residuals such as the bark and stumps are gaining popularity as a source of feedstock for manufacturing mulch and soil products in the US. The one million cu-yd of bark at the Great Northern Paper Co., Maine, is being processed into garden products by Earthgro of Lebanon, Connecticut. The greenhouse company Jolly Farmer, Maine, processes bark and stumps from mills into mulch products. The stump mulch is mixed with softwood bark and sold to landscapers. The mulch products are sold under the Parkis Mills and Jolly Farmer brands.

Composting organics at a military base
Article Abstract:
The Solid Waste Pilot Composting Project, started in October, 1995 at the Marine Corps Base in Camp Lejeune, aims to evaluate the compostability and compatibility of several organics streams. Yard trimmings, untreated wood, food residuals, paper, corrugated cardboard and horse manures have been used in forming new windrows, approximately every two weeks. On a preselected day, 1,000 to 2,000 gallons of water is sprayed on active windrows. The moisture, temperature and odor for each active windrow is monitored daily.
