Programs promote backyard diversion
Article Abstract:
The Board of Freeholders in Brielle, Monmouth County, New Jersey started a Home-Works Backyard Composting Pilot Project, in Feb 1996. The aim was to increase home composting, on-site management, and separation of organic kitchen scraps and garden trimmings. The stress was on low cost and low technology systems. The implementation of the project involved door-to-door bin distribution, school competitions, workshops and business participation. Commercial institutions reported a 30% decrease in waste stream. Residential participants reported a 33% reduction in compostable organics.

Grinding after the storm
Article Abstract:
The city of Council Bluffs, IA, was able to process storm debris into 24,000 tons of mulch for cattle farmers. Half of the mulch created by the ground storm debris was distributed to neighboring farms. The processing is done at the 12.9-acre Recycling Center, which averages 400 trucks a day. Each truck brings in an average of one to two tons of storm debris. The Recycling Center is considered as an environmentally friendly approach to managing and disposing organic waste and animal waste.
