Research projects add value to MSW composting facility

The Scientific Advisory Committee was assembled to establish parameters for the major issues and concerns with compost production and use and serve as consultants in specific areas. Solid Waste, Recycling and Composting facility headquarted in Lake Panasoffkee at the Sumter Country keeps the Florida Organics Recycling Center for Excellence (FORCE) in the forefront of integrated, innovative and solid waste management.

Controlling stormwater runoff from composting sites
Article Abstract:
Strategies are presented to prevent rain from spreading composting materials into surrounding areas. These include orienting piles and windrows with the compost site's slope, collecting runoff in plastic-lined catchments or earthen ponds, and using gutters on facility buildings to divert rainwater into storage containers rather than the ground.

Private firm converts landfill gas to energy
Article Abstract:
The power plant takes a majority of the gas collected at the landfill, at an average rate of over 2,500 cubic feet per minute (CFM). The generating system includes seven Caterpillar 3516 reciprocating engines that each drives an 800kW generator, for a combined capacity of 5.6 MW.
