Satellite sites pay off for yard trimmings composters
Article Abstract:
Yard trimmings are increasingly being composted at larger sites which deal with between 50,000 and 100,000 tons per year, or more. This has led to the development of satellite sites where trimmings are brought and sometimes processed before being sent to a composting facility. Finished compost can also be distributed at these satellite sites. Satellite sites have been set up in Virgina where the Tidewater area has seen housing development which has led to a reduction in open space. Satellite sites are used elsewhere, for example in Ohio.

Transfer stations in regional recycling
Article Abstract:
The novel way of transfering recyclables to distant recycling facilities through the use of large transport trucks and transfer stations is now being widely practiced. Many recycling programs throughout the US have resorted to this technique because it cuts costs. Large transport trucks particularly save a lot of money because it has six times the capacity of smaller collection trucks. Besides this, collection trucks maximize collection of recyclables. Transfer stations then become halfway stations that promote efficiency.

Integrated collection of recyclables and trash
Article Abstract:
The present economic crisis has led communities to devise ways of reducing trash collection expenses. Called integrated collection or cocollection, the approach utilizes a three-compartmented truck that allows the simultaneous collection of recyclable and non-recyclable refuse. Economically, this option is feasible and also offers consumers free recycling services. Operational problems are, however, foreseen.
