Strategies for commercial organics division
Article Abstract:
The National Audubon Society, in conjunction with three national organizations, established the Minnesota Source Separated Composting Project to evaluate diversion of organic materials in Minnesota. The local community implemented two collection systems, one inside business establishments and the other outside of each business, to improve the collection of compostable materials and frequency of pick-up of garbages for easier data collection. Findings of the program showed that source separated composting is a more effective approach to solid waste management as opposed to other methods.

New developments in Europe: source separation of biogenic waste
Article Abstract:
Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Luxemburg are starting to deal with their household organic refuse by separating the biogenic wastes then sending these to compost plants for processing. Organic waste materials comprising kitchen and garden refuse as well as kitchen paper, plant and shrub prunings are collected into biobins and finally by vehicles with either a rotating drum or pneumatic press which mixes and homogenizes the raw materials. These raw materials are sent to composting plants where they undergo recycling.

The life and times of a composting company
Article Abstract:
The composting industry in Seattle, WA, is experiencing stiff competition with at least six legally operating private composting companies and several other companies with no legal permits. Because of this, the composting companies are forced to improve on their processing facilities, management, marketing and product quality. One such company is the Cedar Grove Composting which has finally been able to successfully reach the stage where the incoming yard waste materials equals the rate of product sales.
