Tackling fish scraps and animal mortalities
Article Abstract:
A project at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, examined how feedstocks such as fish residuals and wildlife mortalities could be composted using a low technology method such as horse stall bedding. The project constructed two bind from hay bales, wire fencing and steel posts, which were filled with wood shavings and manure. A deer roadkill was placed in one bin and fish residuals in the other. Temperatures stayed consistent due to the insulating attributes of the straw bales. The composting project proved successful and odors were eliminated easily, although ot all weed seeds were killed.

The high road to managing hog manure
Article Abstract:
Manure loading rates can rise to excessive levels in regions where there is a concentration of livestock, and this can affect both growth and profitability. Research is being carried out in Ohio on a system for drying hog manure in situ. The system is called the High-Rise Hog Building. This method tackles the problem posed by pollution and transportation of liquids. The system appears to provide the hogs with a stable environment in terms of temperature, and noxious gas levels are low in the pig space.

Composting animal mortalities
Article Abstract:
Ohio State University offers training in animal carcass composting procedures. The carcasses are laid out on a bed of sawdust in a biofilter, covered with high carbon material and left to decompose. The resulting compost is turned and allowed to set again, then stored or spread onto fields used to raise the animals.
