The big and small of biosolids composting
Article Abstract:
The Davenport Composting Facility in Iowa and Harrisonburg-Rockingham Regional Sewer Authority in Virginia effectively use static piles for biosolids composting. The facilities use unique process control features and successfully control odors. The unit cost/dry ton of biosolids capacity at both facilities is $275,000. The operation and maintenance cost estimations for the facilities in Iowa and Virginia are $95 and $138 /dry ton of biosolids respectively. The design differences and process flows of the facilities are described.

Rethinking the composting process
Article Abstract:
The operation of new aerated composting facilities in Longmont, CO in May 1991 entailed a lot of problems. Operational changes directed towards moisture control, amendment supply and odor management were done to ensure stability of the finished compost. Every step of the process was recorded and the effects of any alteration made were sorted out. Although most of the earlier problems have been addressed, there are remaining areas that need modifications.
