Learning the compost business ... in prison
Article Abstract:
The Maine Correctional Center (MCC) in Windham, ME, has been receiving crab residuals mixed with sawdust at its composting site since the end of Mar 1999. Composting staff at the prison and the owner of Portland Shellfish have been working together since then to ensure that the residuals are correctly processed. There are a number of plans for expanding this work, including developing the existing site by building a further 200 sq ft gravel pad next to the current compost site and constructing a leachate collection/treatment system.

On-farm composting in Austria and Switzerland
Article Abstract:
It is common in Austria and Switzerland for green waste from towns to be composted on agricultural land. Local authorities pay farmers to manage the compost, and usually fund the construction of a compost pad and turner. The farmer may be obliged to supply part of the finished compost to town residents free of charge. Many of the compost producers are also end users of the product. The local authorities meet most of the costs of production, and the financial viability of composting therefore does not depend on product sales.
