The vanishing sugar maple
Article Abstract:
The Adirondack Park, New York, contains 5 mil acres of forest land, exhibiting such trees as Sugar maple, beech, yellow birch, black cherry, red maple, and spruce. A WCS research on Adirondack forest regeneration revealed that when commercial forests were cut, hardwoods did not reproduce and the new growth was all beech. These findings alarmed researchers because the failure of hardwoods to reproduce may result in loss of diversity and support for wildlife and people.
