Leviathans in South East Asia
Article Abstract:
The rule of law is glaringly absent in the three leviathans states of Southeast Asia, namely, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. President Suharto of Indonesia abolished the rule of law by subverting the 1945 constitution. Consequently, elections are a sham as they ensure the rule of the same government. Laws in Singapore allow the government to extract the citizens' uncritical obedience and protect it from challenge. Although the democratic civilian state of Thailand is subject to the rule of law, it is dominated by military authorities with little faith in constitutional norms.
