Melville's Puritan imagination
Article Abstract:
The author argues that the works of Herman Melville embrace, rather than forsake, the values of Puritan theology, and promote their millennial ideal for American society. Sin and damnation are equated with lonely, goal-less drifting, while the Puritan's predestined millennium is represented as arrival into truth and meaning.

Sacramental shopping: 'Little Women' and the spirit of modern consumerism
Article Abstract:
Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women' can be seen as a conjunction between Victorian religion and consumer culture. Similar to John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress,' Alcott's characters encounter materialist temptations while avoiding the belief that choosing fashionable goods creates identity and delivers happiness.
