Midwives, godmothers, and witches: female body and identity in the Italian south
Article Abstract:
The plight of women in southern Italy was studied by two ethnographers. Both analyzed the social context with which sex discrimination against women have thrived in the area. The cultural and social factors which shaoped the women's role in society as procreators have also been emphasized. It was noted that despite the occurence of socioeconomic reforms, the role of women has remained the same, a second class citizen compared to men. Such discrimination have developed tension and silent rebellion in women. This tension is characterized in the works of the two ethnographers, Bernardino Palumo and Mariella Pandolfi.
