Mute gospel: the salt marshes of Martin Johnson Heade
Article Abstract:
American painter Martin Johnson Heade's salt marsh landscapes are critiqued. Heade painted more than a hundred salt marsh pictures between 1860 and 1900, and the best of them are of comparable brilliance to those of his more famous contemporaries. While his singleminded dedication to paint salt marshes can be explained by his upbringing and personal hobby, it cannot be denied that he saw a singular beauty in salt marshes no artist in his time had seen.
