November coming attractions: In preparation for November elections, political parties gamble on the strength of their immigration platforms

Questions are raised about the electoral impact of the immigration legislation among the Hispanic community in the elections of November 2006. Both Democrats and Republicans are formulating electoral strategies to obtain Hispanic votes, even as immigrant groups plan to concentrate efforts in battleground states to influence outcomes by the creation of a powerful Hispanic voting bloc that cannot be ignored and will be useful to immigrants in the future.

Controversial ruling on Cuban trade: New terms of payment for agricultural sales create concern
Article Abstract:
The changes made as per the Bush administration clarifications to the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act of 2002, made for trade laws with Cuba, which deal with agricultural sales are presented. As per the new ruling Cuba should fulfill the payment for the food and agricultural products before they leave the United States soil but opponents of the ruling feel that this move will make the U.S. agricultural producers non-competitive.

Visa increase under debate
Article Abstract:
The Senate Judiciary Committee held hearing on proposals that would increase the number H-1B visas, which are issued to high-tech and other skilled foreign workers. Committee chair Senator Arlen Specter (Republican-Pennsylvania) wants to increase the number of workers visas available to 125,000 annually and the proposal would also raise the employer-paid fee for the visa from $3,185 to $3,685.
