On with the show: with Spanish-language television continuing to surge, NBC gets in on the action by acquiring Telemundo

NBC will pay $1.98 billion in cash and stock for Telemundo. Telemundo hopes the deal will help it gain ground against larger rival Univision in the growing Spanish-language television market in the United States. After the May sweeps period, Telemundo's market share of Hispanic adult viewers age 18 to 49 totaled approximately 30%.

Merger finally gets green light

The FCC, voting along party lines, narrowly voted to allow Univision to buy Hispanic Broadcasting Corp. On news of the vote, Standard & Poor's raised Univision's credit rating from junk to investment grade, taking it to BBB- from BB+.
