Price inflation in the UK: has anything changed?
Article Abstract:
The inflation rate has stayed low since the UK left the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) in 1992, with an underlying rate averaging 2.8% since the start of 1993. This would seem to indicate changes in wage and price behaviour but there is little evidence to suggest a major structural shift. Low inflation is therefore attributed to changes in demand on prices with the temporary benefits of low utility and energy prices, and general low world inflation, together with macroeconomic policy which has helped to sustain export-led recovery.
