The impact of colonialism: thoughts on politics and governance in Bangladesh
Article Abstract:
Bangladesh's colonial experience under the British empire for nearly two hundred years informed its efforts to follow the UK parliamentary democracy model. The UK model proved to be more attractive than Pakistan's presidential system. The country's experience of colonial rule heightened citizen participation in political matters, with new opportunities to express opposition. Government, meanwhile, responded to opposition as colonial rulers through repressive measures. The role and nature of political parties was also influenced by the colonial experience, with the the establishment of a democratic system a goal of most parties.

A democratic paradox: The communalisation of politics in Ceylon, 1911-1948
Article Abstract:
The intercommunal elite struggle of Sri Lanka or Ceylone between 1911 and independence in February 1948, which led to process of rethinking of separate interests and objectives between Sinhalese and Tamils, is described. The implementation of democratic politics, the atrophy of the power of the elites during the period and the sidelining of their moderating influence in the following years accelerated the new Ceylon into the harsh realities of a multi-ethnic democracy lacking the constitutional, institutional and social infrastructure to deal effectively with political forces.
