Tom Sawyer's capitalism and the destructuring of Huck Finn

Article Abstract:

Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer series can be interpreted as anticapitalist narratives. While 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' portrayed a budding capitalist, Twain's ironic comments raise questions about the process. In 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,' Twain prioritizes Huck's world view. In the versions of the Tom Sawyer play, 'Tom Sawyer Abroad,' 'Tom Sawyer, Detective' and 'Tom Sawyer's Conspiracy,' Twain explores Tom's exploitativeness. 'Three Thousand Years AMong the Microbes' serves as an openly anti-capitalist text.

"Something more than a drummer's interest": commercial realism in 'The Rise of Silas Lapham.'

Article Abstract:

William Dean Howells novel 'The Rise of Silas Lapham' is an exploration of 19th century business culture and the character of Tom Corey can be interpreted as representing Howell's ideal. Tom Corey construction into an important commercial role parallels the slow distancing that Lapham faces. As Lapham moves to Vermont, Tom and Penelope move South. His business activities and decisions mark the future for Howells.
