Methanogenesis and the unity of biochemistry
Article Abstract:
The pathway for reduction of CO2 to methane (CH4) in archaebacteria was discussed. Archaebacteria are unique because their ability to synthesize CH4 differentiates their underlying metabolic chemistry from those of bacteria and eukaryotes. The discussion showed that the understanding of the structure and function of enzymes involved in methanogenesis is still incomplete. Moreover, future studies of the unique reactions of methanogenesis are expected to reveal variations on the same reactions observed in bacteria and eukaryotes.
