Maintaining placement for troubled and disruptive adolescents in voluntary residential care: the role of reduced youth-to-staff ratio
Article Abstract:
Reduced youth-to-staff ratio homes (RRHs) help to maintain placement of highly troubled youth in voluntary and moderately restricted residential care programs. Mean additional length of stay in RRHs is 920 days compared to 174 days in regular residential care. Success ratio of highly troubled youth is comparable to that of a less troubled group. Aggression, psychopathology, and chances of failure are higher as compared to those of youth in more restrictive settings. Failure in RRHs increases chances of placement in non-voluntary and more restricted homes. Cost analysis of RRHs is discussed.
