Moving beyond institutional care for individuals with developmental disabilities

Article Abstract:

The indicators of an acceptable quality of care for mentally retarded individuals such as psychological services, medical services, psychiatric services and the provisions of acceptable treatment and training environment have been explored to analyze the acceptable quality of life. Simply providing these services does not ensure positive changes in the quality of life of an individual. These services should substantially be in compliance with currently acceptable professional standards if an institution is to be judged as providing an acceptable quality of care for its residents.

Culture and mental health: nonverbal communication

Article Abstract:

Nonverbal communication involves problems in cultural misunderstandings and misinterpretations. People belonging to holistic cultures tend to listen more with their eyes rather than their ears since both body language and verbal expression are more obvious to them. Traditional greetings in the form of handshakes and body contact are less observed in Asian countries compared to their Western counterparts. Other forms of nonverbal communication with different meanings in diverse cultures are holding hands, shrugging, silence and use of eyes in interpersonal expressions.
