Race and ethnic variation in norms of filial responsibility among older persons
Article Abstract:
Older Blacks and Hispanics are more likely than Whites to support coresidence with adult children, particularly when adult children are expected to take their parents into their own home, according to research into race and ethnic diversity in attachment to the standards of intergenerational filial responsibility. In the case of older persons not living with an adult child at first observation, Blacks and Hispanics were found to be more likely than Whites to have joined their households with adult children at the follow-up observation time.

Depression among older parents: the role of intergenerational exchange
Article Abstract:
A study of the association between depression among 388 elderly parents and the relationship with their adult children shows a positive correlation between filial responsibility ideas and depression. Sociodemographic factors such as age and health reduce the correlation somewhat. Older people and those in worse health had higher expectations regarding filial responsibility and were more depressed. Receiving help from children, even when such help was needed, was also positively related to depression.
