Self-verification and depressive symptoms in marriage and courtship: a multiple pathway model
Article Abstract:
Researchers examined the role of self-verifying feedback from a marital or courtship partner in affecting depressive symptoms. Studies of 138 married women and 258 women in long-term relationships revealed that self-verifying feedback from the partner may magnify the effect of self-esteem levels on depression. It will decrease depression in women with high self-esteem but increase depressive symptoms in women with low self-esteem. However, the study also indicated the mediating effect of self-verification feedback through its association with increased relationship satisfaction.

Beyond marital status: partner history and well-being in old age
Article Abstract:
The link between partner history variables and loneliness in older adults has been assessed using life history information from a Dutch survey. There was found to be greater loneliness in older adults not at present in a partner relationship than in those with a partner. This seems to be related to the fact that such people have always lacked or have lost relationship-specific benefits for which it is hard to compensate. A person's partner history is just as important as his or her current partner status.
