Single parenting in families of children with disabilities
Article Abstract:
Being the single parent of a disabled child is not correlated with higher stress levels than single-parenting other children, contrary to previous assumptions. The sources of stress and adaptation derive more from maternal education and income than from any other source. Researchers and aid professionals need to recognize the heterogeneity of such families and design studies or programs with that in mind. The help provided by adult caregivers other than the single parent needs more investigation.
