Reports of violence in schools have generated widespread fear among children, even those attending schools in the most crime-free areas. News reports of school violence serve to make it appear that the problem is worse than it is and may also serve to make violence more prevalent.

Teach children about strangers: how to protect them without scaring them

Children need to be taught to avoid contact with strangers and how to get away if a stranger puts them in a situation that may trap them. Ways to protect children include instructing them not to help adults, how to get help, not keep secrets, and fight back if they are grabbed.
