The Connie Chung phenomenon
Article Abstract:
The 'Connie Chung Phenomenon' refers to television journalism's Asian- American gender gap. Female Asian-American reporters and anchors outnumber male Asian-Americans. Several theories were formulated to explain this phenomenon, one of which is that American people are not used to being told to by Asian men or being in positions of authority. They are more attuned to Asian women in authority since they are seen as submissive. Female Asian- American TV personalities are oftentimes mistaken for Connie Chung, co-anchor of Dan Rather and the most prominent Asian-American face on TV.
