A wine taster and reviewer recalls the various Napa Valley Cabernets he has tasted over some years. He recounts details of some of the excellent Cabernets including the 1968 Heitz Martha's Vineyard, Beaulieu Vineyard Private Reserve bottlings, the 1939 Special Reserve Martini Cabernet and the 1978 Diamond Creek Lake Vineyard.

A man recalls visiting a fine Paris restaurant on his first visit to the city in the mid-1960s. At age 17, he impressed the sommelier by having memorized some facts about wine, and the sommelier presented him with a good value wine from the lesser-known Chateau Monbousquet.

The experience of acquiring some understanding of wine and wine tasting whilst an Oxford student is recalled. The satisfaction of moving from a base of no expertise, to a limited but useful degree of knowledge, is described.
