Rhone Valley, France's second largest wine growing area, faced challenges from the growing season and rain during harvest, when the 2001 vintage unfolded, raising questions about the quality. However, Rhone Valley winemakers produced classy reds in the south and compelling whites in the north and plenty of solid values, to make 2001 a successful year for the Rhone Valley.

Michel Chapoutier, head of M. Chapoutier winery in France's Rhone Valley, is expanding his business through acquisitions, new land purchases, and the addition of new types of wines. Chapoutier has worked for three years to receive approval to plant the Swiss Petite Arvine grape in France.

1997 White Burgundy: an upside-down vintage

Article Abstract:

The 1997 vintage of white Burgundies does not match the quality of the 1996 and 1995 vintages, but has yielded many enjoyable wines. Chablis and Macon regions fared much better than Cote D'Or. Vocoret & Fils Chablis Montmains and Joseph Drouhin Rully White were among the best 1997 values.
