Breakfast cereals back in vogue, says report

Consumption of breakfast cereals continues to rise steadily in world markets according to Euromonitor, market analysts, with the highest per capita consumption in the UK. In Europe breakfast cereals are also becoming a popular alternative to croissants and jam or bacon and eggs. Kellogg is market leader, with own label cereals popular in the UK, where they have a 26% share of the value market. Family cereals are an important sector in the UK and Germany, while sugary children's brands are the most popular sector in Japan and France.

Traditional British breakfast loses out to cereals

The UK breakfast cereal market is a strong growth area and has more than doubled during the 10 years to 1995, according to a report by Datamonitor. The market is dominated by Kellogg's brands, although Weatabix, Quaker and Shredded Wheat manufacturers have significant shares. The best selling brand is Kellogg's Cornflakes. Nestle of Switzerland has recent formed a joint venture with General Mills of the US, to try and break Kellogg's hold on the UK market.

European breakfast cereal sales helped by health awareness

Consumption of breakfast cereals throughout Europe have risen due to health awareness amongst consumers, according to a report by Frost & Sullivan. Mueslies are considred to be health cereals and are particularly popular in Germany and the Netherlands. Bran-based cereals are favoured by health-conscious consumers, particularly in Spain, Italy and France. The cereals market is expected to rise at 8.1% a year until 2001.
