The historic Paris Wine Tasting of 1973 brought international respect for California wines when Stag's Leap 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon and Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay won first place for red and white wines. Exports of California wines grew from almost nothing to $200 million in 1995.

'Mad rush' to Chile by California and French vintners
Article Abstract:
Fetzer, Robert Mondavi and Chateau Lafite Rothschild are some of the California and French wine makers who are investing in wineries in Chile or buying grapes for their wines from Chilean grape growers. The move is seen as a marketing move, but prices are not expected to rise yet.

Boom time for California vintners means higher prices and grape shortages

A shortage of California grapes due to a parasite attack, and a growth in consumer buying of wine, has fostered a supply problem that is leading to higher wine prices. Grape prices are also spiralling as vintners compete for the raw materials to make the wine.
