Sainsbury's sales rise as retailer fights back
Article Abstract:
The supermarket chain Sainsbury's reported a turnover of 14.3 billion pounds sterling in 1996 which is an increase of 6% from the turnover in 1995. The improvement in sales during 1996 did not prevent a 11% decline in operating profits to 661.5 million pounds sterling. The Reward card scheme has helped to increase customer loyalty although operating margins were adversely affected by the cost of establishing the scheme. Sales from Shaw's, a subsidiary company in the US improved by 12.4% although profits were reduced due to the cost of acquiring 17 stores from the Ahold group.
