Swedish food exports soar 24%, imports up 12%

Article Abstract:

Swedish food exports rose to 24% in fiscal 1997, although the growth rate is unlikely to be sustained in 1998, according to figures from the National Board of Agriculture. Imports rose 12%, and are maintaining a steady annual gain, leading to a widening trade gap. The strong exports were mainly due to increased margarine sales to Russia, high prices for Swedish grains and sugar and dairy exports to the EU. The Netherlands was the largest exporter with Denmark the top importer.

France heads list of food exports to Spain

Article Abstract:

France is the top supplier of food to Spain, having a 19.5% share, although imports have fallen over the past two years. Imports from other countries have seen strong growth over the past year. Cereals are the main products exported to Spain by France, but French products have become more expensive than domestically produced products due to the devaluation of the peseta. Meat exports from France have risen, with the country supplying three quarters of Spain's turkey meat.

BSE fails to daunt UK exporters

Article Abstract:

A general mood of optimism was reflected at the Food from Britain (FFB) export conference held in March. UK food and drink exports are expected to reach 10 billion pounds sterling in 1996, although the health issues relating to beef overshadowed the conference. UK manufacturers will increasingly need to look abroad for future growth to remain competitive.
