North American food boosts Philip Morris

US-based food and tobacco operator Philip Morris Companies Inc. has reported a second quarter 1997 profit of $1.8 billion, up 13.3% from previously, with turnover rising by 5.9% to $18.4 billion. US food sales during the period totalled $7 billion. Kraft Foods North America reported sales up 3.5% to $4.3 billion. Meanwhile, Philip Morris' international food sales amounted to $2.6 billion, down 3.6%, mainly because of currency exchange fluctuations.

Global exceeds expectations

Global of the UK, has reported a rise in turnover of 29% to 119.4 million pounds sterling, with its main Food Trading division lifting sales 34% to 89.7 million pounds sterling. Its Food Processing division saw sales up by 20% to 9.3 million pounds sterling. The company acquired Ravencrown Ltd and Mawbeef Manufacturing Ltd in January 1996 and has also recently acquired Express Caters Fast Food Ltd.
