Ahold profits up 17% in first half

Ahold of the Netherlands, a retail company, reported a rise in interim net profit of 16.9%, on sales up 13%, helped by positive exchange rates. Store sales in the home market rose by 4.4%, with US sales up by 14.9%. There was combined turnover of 1.1 billion Hfl from its Czech and Portuguese operations. The company has had to restructure its US chains following the recent purchase of the Stop & Shop chain.
