Competition still intense in UK retail sector

Article Abstract:

The large UK supermarket chains are constantly looking for ways to retain their customers as it becomes more difficult to entice new customers away from their usual shopping outlets. The UK food retailing market is worth some 93 billion pounds sterling. It is predicted the popularity of home shopping via the Internet will only increase very slowly. Asda Group PLC has improved its share of the UK grocery market to 8.8%, in 1997. J. Sainsbury PLC has a 13% share of custom but they are still led by Tesco PLC, which has a 16.8% share.

Tesco overtakes Sainsbury as number one retailer in the UK?

Article Abstract:

Tesco has become the leading supermarket chain with a higher market share than its main rival, Sainsbury, according to figures from AGB, a research consultancy. Tesco had pre tax profit up 12.7% to 595 million pounds sterling in 1994, with Wm Low outlets contributing to overall group sales. Its Catteau subsidiary in France saw sales rise 16.1% and sales generated by Global of Hungary were 16 million pounds sterling.

Sainsbury most profitable UK grocer, but losing market share

Article Abstract:

Sainsbury of the UK, a grocery retailer, has reported a 10.5% rise in pre tax profits and is now the market leader in terms of profit. However research shows that Tesco has a larger market share with sales up by 2.2% in 1994, compared to Sainsbury's 0.3%. Both companies are having to diversify now that planning restrictions limit new out of town outlets.
