EU retaliates in Czech apple quota dispute
Article Abstract:
Czech Republic food manufacturing companies are likely to have their export trade, with the European Union (EU), adversely affected by EU measures to postponement of the tariff agreement with the Czech authorities. The Czech Republic introduced a quota system on EU apple imports to protect their own apple industry which had losses of EUC6.8 million, in 1997. The EU may also impose full duties on the Czech dairy industry. The suspension of the special tariff arrangement between the EU and the Czech Republic will cost the Czechs at least EUC3-5 million.

Raffarin against plans for a new hypermarket for Tours
Article Abstract:
Local planning authorities in Tours, France, have refused permission for the Casino retail group to shut one of its Rallye outlets and replace it with a larger hypermarket and shopping centre on the city outskirts. The refusal has the backing of the French minister for Commerce Jean-Pierre Raffarin, although new legislation covering planning permission procedures does not usually allow the Ministry of Commerce to interfere.
